Would an Old Diesel motor start easier on cold mornings with a few liters of unleaded petrol in it?
Friday, January 22nd, 2010Hey guys,
I have an old 84 model diesel ute and im having some trouble starting it on cold mornings.
Was wondering if a few liters of unleaded petrol mixed with the diesel would help solve the problem?
If so would it be doing any damage to the motor?

just buy new heater plugs!

Don’t mix gas with the fuel. It will dilute the lubrication qualities of the fuel and may well cause engine damage. Chances are your engine has glow plugs to aid in starting and they need replacement. If they do not have glow plugs you could use some starting fluid to help start.

Never put gas in a dsl engine. or u will not have an engine any more.
you may need new glow plugs or u can put a block heater in it and plug it in overnight to keep it warm.

they make a fuel treatment fo rthat but really your glow plug or maybe you should use a water or oil heater plug it in and it will stay warm al nite and be ready to go when ever you are

No petrol for a diesel engine! Sometimes the glow (heater) plugs wear out. They are like spark plugs replaced during tuneups on a petrol engine. After 24 years, it could very well be the glow plugs. They also tend to wear out quicker if somebody forgot to let them warm up before trying to start the engine. Also, on cold mornings, you might want to let them warm up, then turn off the engine, then turn the key back so they warm up again before restarting.

probably wouldn’t help it. probably would hurt it. try a block heater, or allowing the glow plugs to cycle a bit longer.

NO!
Never put gas in a diesel engine. Get your glow plugs serviced/replaced and or clean the tank lines and filter. If you live in a really cold winter climate, you might consider a plug-in electric core heater for your engine block.

I have herd of people putting petrol or kerosene in diesel trucks in the 60s but it stuffs the motors.
You could put a little bit of kero in the diesel but not much about 1liter
to 50 liters but not more but it will shorten the life of the motor.
You could get a cold star kit that gives the motor a shot of ether to make it start but that stuff is explosive and can bend crank shafts.
The reason old diesels don’t start is because they have lost compression and using kero or ether will make it worse in the long run.
