Hate to disagree but… Nothing wrong with Toyota investigating themselves. You see, now that they have done such a crappy job of it, they stand to lose a huge chunk of their market share. So in truth they had strong incentives to do it right the first way, and quickly. They didn’t, and they will pay for it dearly
Plus, consumers actually have done a ton of investigating too: they kept the pressure on Toyota because the issue was not going away
