Toyota Acceleration Problem Is Still Unresolved – ABC’s Nightline

November 3, 2009, 3:48 pm Toyota Acceleration Problem Is Still Unresolved By Christopher Jensen (The New York Times) Toyota said on Tuesday that a press release it issued on Monday was not intended to give the impression that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had cleared 3.8 million of its vehicles of having an unintended acceleration defect. Indeed, the federal agency said it was still investigating the exact cause of the acceleration problem. Toyota and the safety administration issued a warning in September to the owners of the Toyota and Lexus vehicles to remove the driver-side floor mat because it could jam the accelerator pedal. The warning was issued after the problem led to the death in August in California of four people in a Lexus. The company said in Mondays release that it would send letters to vehicle owners warning that an unsecured floor mat could jam the accelerator. But the release went further, implying that, apart from the floor mats, the agency found no other problem. Toyota wrote: The letter, in compliance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and reviewed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also confirms that no defect exists in vehicles in which the drivers floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured. The wording is subtle, but it could give the impression that the safety agency had found no safety defect beyond errant floor mats. Some news articles certainly interpreted …

This is pure BS. No 100hp Prius is going to overcome the brakes. never. These are people with problems and it’s not with the Prius.

Are people stupid? For it to jam against your pedal, you have to first press your pedal all the way down *and* somehow push your mat forward….
And all of you people who think that people purposefully are crashing their cars and putting their families in danger….yeah. Okay, sure. *rolls eyes*

I think the advice offered at end – push the brake pedal hard, put the car in neutral to make it stop, and then turn it off – is the best thing about this video. I don’t really know who is wrong here; it could either be the drivers or Toyota Motors. But the way to handle the situation if does something goes wrong is a great way inform the people.
I think they should make this sort of a thing mandatory in drivers ed for young drivers. It’s just like teaching some one CPR: you may save lives.

@ohfuhhk that is another thing about Toyota car. They steer on it’s own, ABC had cover that story. Better tell your toyota dealer about your situation.

Hey, remember Cheech and Chong? ‘Whoa man, I thought you said step on the gas!’. People malfunction too. They crash cars for lots of reasons. Mostly poor judgment. Everyone wants to blame the car. It’s just the continuing saga of people not wanting to take responsibility for their actions. Very typically American. I think they should put video cameras, simple webcams, under the dash to watch what people are doing with the pedals. We’ll settle this once and for all.

Isn’t it odd that the average Toyota driver is 35 but the average acceleration victim is 65?

First the floor mats then the gas pedals pretty soon its gonna be the electrical system.A couple weeks or so a lady was on the news because her toyota spun off and it hit a ymca and she said she just got it taken to the dealer because of the recall so theres gotta be something other then the gas pedal thats going on,

ford had problems with the breaks this year and i dont see a big fuss about it. i think they want to do this so toyota cant sell cars because the government bought most of the dealers and they cant sell so they hit toyota one of the top markets so they steal the consumers.

Have you guys ever heard of the Audi 5000? of course not, it was a very well built car that was to sell in the US, but sales died after people said it suddenly accelerated, later it turns out it was because the driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, I think this is just a way to make excuses for accidents and kills the primary competitor against US cars, Toyotas also have the most reliable cars on the market.

Toyota – “Moving Forward” – Even when you let your foot off the gas pedal..
Toyota – “Moving Forward” – Even when you stomp on the brakes..
Toyota – “Moving Forward” – Even when you shift into neutral & pull the E-brake.
Toyota – “Moving Forward” – Until it slams into the back of a semi-truck @ 110 mph toyota rule i love my toyota

Toyota hasn’t agreed that the cars are the fault. They’ve simply stated they wouldn’t blame the drivers. It’s what the Japanese do – it’s called ‘saving face’. The Japanese don’t blame people even if it’s obvious to allow them to save some dignity.

Drivers are the problem! Like Audi’s issue over 20 years ago – all the cars back then were defect free and only AUTOMATIC cars were affected. WHY? Drivers pressed the gas instead of the brake.
Telling the truth doesn’t improve ratings.
Brakes are more powerful than engines. If you mash the brake and the gas at the same time the car will still stop – it might take a few feet longer but it will stop.
Car and Driver proved it last month by testing Nissan, Toyota and Ford cars and all stopped.

American make fuss and start beating before they see the truth.Exactly like witch-hunting.
Japanese sale the car all over the world.
Why this problem only happens in America?
Why no one able to find any defect?
Just 2 accidents ruin everything of Toyota?
Watch yourself carefully before start blaming someone.
In anyway you will see the fact soon.
