2007 Ford Edge SEL: Easy Sale, Good Price

As we reported recently, the 2007 Ford Edge SEL generated a lot more excitement than we anticipated, with two buyers coming forward in the first weekend. One family wanted it for a high school-aged daughter and test drove it twice. The next day the father called me, cleared his throat, and made an offer.

First, I'll remind you that our True Market Value price was $18,033 and our listing price on Autotrader.com was $17,900. It's always fun to try to guess what a person's opening offer is going to be. I was psychically sending him signals to offer $17,500 and I would generously offer to split the difference and close at $17,700.

"We could be over there this afternoon with cash and pay you $16,000," he said. (Buyers always think that using the word "cash" will make you giddy with excitement.) His offer took me by surprise and I couldn't conceal my disappointment. "No, I can't consider that," I told him. "The very least we'd take is $17,500." He said he wasn't in a hurry and told me to call him back if I changed my mind.

Two hours later I got a text message from him, "Okay, we'll buy the car at $17,500." Nice.

Frankly, I was surprised we were able to get this much for the Edge and sell it so quickly. Yes, it's a pleasant SUV, with a comfortable driving position and good looks. But the brakes scare me (152-foot stopping distance from 60 mph versus 120 feet from competitors) and our observed lifetime fuel economy of 14 mpg is disappointing.

So we paid $29,500 for the Edge and we were able to sell it for $17,500. That's a depreciation of $12,000 or 40 percent over three and a half years ago and 36,400 miles

2009 Ford Flex: Seats Are Very Easy To Fold

Got me a new addition for my garagemahal, free shelves from photographer Scott Jacobs'.

As I expected the shelving unit fit easily in our long-term 2009 Ford Flex, and as I expected the Flex's four rear seats folded flat very easily. But notice how the armrest/console/frig between the second row bucket seats is in the way and could have been easily damaged. And it is not removeable.

It didn't really affect this day of heavy hauling, but it could be a problem when you're transporting larger, sharper or dirtier cargo.

You would be surprised how often I get into a performance-oriented car and have trouble getting comfortable. It's not like I'm some oversized Neanderthal either. A little taller than average maybe, but otherwise normal.

The Mazdaspeed 3 is one of the those cars that feels comfortable the minute you get in. A slight slide of the seat, move the steering wheel a bit and it's perfect. And although I noted before that I'm not all that thrilled with the pedal placement, the fact that I'm otherwise positioned comfortably does a lot to make up for it.

Oh, and the driver's seat is pretty nice for a vehicle in this price range. Nothing spectacular, but enough bolstering in the right places to notice that it's a notch above your average hatchback. Overall, a well thought out cockpit that I never get tired of.

2009 Ford Flex Limitied: A Tiring Task Made Easy

This weekend, I had to mount some tires on rims as part of my Miata restoration project. The tires in question are old — 20 years old. Understandably, no tire shop would touch them. But in the interest of accurate display, I needed to have the "correct" BFG T/A R1 tires on the car. What to do?

I loaded the four thoroughly used tires I got from a fellow racer and some bare rims into our 2009 Ford Flex and hauled them to another friend's race shop, where he agreed to let me have access to his mount and balance machines so I could do it myself.

I was done in 20 minutes. It all went smoothly because the sidewalls were remarkably free of cracks and the rubber was still pliable due to indoor storage in a dark, climate-controlled space.

Still, I don't dare do anything with these old BFGs but use them for static display. They're not going to see any track time. But that's no problem because my buddy was kind enough to loan me a mounted set of Toyo 15" Spec Miata race tires, plus a spare, should I want to lap the car.

In all, I had 8 mounted wheels and tires and one extra unmounted donut to haul home. The Flex's cargo sapce and fold-flat third row made easy work of it. Four of them fit standing up behind the tumbled second row while the rest fit flat in the back for the short ride home. The rear fridge/console was a bit of a pain, however, as it sticks up above the floor and gets in the way. I don't think I'd order one equipped this way.

2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Easy Trunk Workaround

We've been intentionally limiting how often and how hard we drive our longterm 2002 Corvette Z06 while we sort out its detonation issue, which is why posts related to the silver sports car have been few and far between.

Nevertheless, the handful of editors that have driven it have all muttered about its trunk refusing to pop up more than a millimeter or two when you press the trunk release. This makes the lid darned near impossible to open fully without prying it up with some kind of implement, which none of us dare attempt.

I found a way to make the decklid pop up all the way to a grab-able height without resorting to such cavemen techniques, though. The workaround involves a highly sophisticated fluid mechanics phenomenon that I demonstrate in the video above. Gotta make sure those windows are rolled all the way up for it to work.
