A 15L doesn’t necessarily use more fuel than a 12.7L. There are probably close to 100 variables that determine fuel mileage. Everything from the aerodynamics of the truck, the transmission and rear end gears, condition of the engine, how the electronics are set up on the engine, the condition of the air filter(s), the fuel itself, how the truck is driven and the load on the truck. The list goes on and on.
You can expect anywhere from 4.8MPG to around 7 or 8 MPG depending on a lot of things.
The manufacturer of the engine is pretty much personal preference. They all make good and bad engines. A cat costs a little more to fix when it breaks. I have found detroits to be more dependable. New Cummins are pretty strong and have gotten away from a lot of the problems of the old ones.
I have had three trucks and all of them have been detroits. What I look at to determine what engine I choose is, what are the big companies running. They know far better than I what engines, drivelines and trucks are most economical. Most big fleetes are running Detroits. I am in business to make money, not to look cool riding in cool looking large car. Another factor I pay attention to is when you see a truck sitting on the side of the road with the hood up, what color is the engine. 8 out of 10 times it’s yellow.
I know i’ll get a bunch of thumbs down from die hard cat lovers, but you can’t deny the facts. As I said it’s pretty much personal preference. Mine happens to be Detroit.

My dad had THREE caterpillar 3406 E engines break down in two weeks. major overhauls on all of them. He also has a KTA Cummins that never never failed him except how much it cost to run it. I just dont like Detroits because they arent big power houses but they putter down the road with some problems every once in a while.n Even if something has more power it may get as good or better mileage due to ease of power. Like stated, its more of a preference.
