Usually diesels get better mileage. This assumes that the gearing and all that is similar. They just cost more to purchase and in a lot of places diesel is now more expensive than gas. This means it will take a lot more miles before you pay off that initial extra cost.

I have a 5-speed Beetle TDI and I get 45-49 mpg so yes, they get much better mileage. Diesel is a little more per gallon but you get much more out of a gallon than gas.

A diesel will get better mileage than a gasoline car, at the expense of being slower off the line (you won’t win many drag races)

Anyone that reckons a TDI motor is slower off the mark than a petrol powered equivalent, hasn’t driven a modern diesel.
The torque figures on modern common rail turbo diesels is immense.
